THE SUFI DANCER
“A desire to explore a sculpture that considers human beings…
A positive symbol, removed from everyday life, its stress and anxieties.
An object that brings serenity to the eye and infuses harmony through its rotation.
An object that makes us and our hearts “dance”.
The dance journey (Sema) of Dervishes that spin around the room’s floor represents the solar system with the planets that move around the sun. The ritual sees dancers whirling with their left hand pointing to the ground and the right hand reaching up towards the sky. As the Dervish rotates, the weight is put on the left foot (called the “cushion”) while the right leg gives the impulse to the rotation. To prevent getting a headache, Dervishes keep their head slightly bent towards the left palm with the eyes fixed on the left palm.
